2000 John Stanley Martin

John Stanley Martin (1933-2010), the great grandson of Bridget Carrucan, married Helen Elizabeth Laurence Tucker in 1971 and they had two children, Nigel and Robert. He and his brother Jim are sons of John Herbert (Jack) Martin (1899-1977) and Eileen Martin (nee Grant).
In 1969, John was appointed Lecturer in Charge of Swedish and Old Icelandic at the University of Melbourne, becoming a Senior Lecturer in 1979 and Associate Professor and Reader in 1988. The same year he was made a Knight of Royal Swedish Order of the Polar Star. The Swedish Section, founded in 1962, was a small operation. John worked hard to build it up to become a viable unit. In 1995 he retired from the University of Melbourne. During the 27 years at the university he wrote and edited books and produced articles on a range of topics, including medieval Iceland, mythology, the medieval church, Scandinavians and their communities in Australia and liturgical language.
