Peter wore the number 6 guernsey for Collingwood Football Club from 1965 to 1975. In his 12 year career with the Magpies, he played 180 games, led the club's goal kicking in eight consecutive seasons (1967-1974), won the club's best and fairest player award in 1970, won an All-Australian vest in 1972 and won the John Coleman medal (the most goals kicked in the season by any player in the AFL) in 1972 and 1973.
Regarded as one of the first 'pop stars' in the game, he was a favourite of the Magpie Army due to his supreme skills.

1950s - Margaret and Michael Carrucan154 viewsMichael Martin Carrucan (1866-1954), the fourth child of Peter and Hannah Carrucan, married Margaret Lynch at the St Thomas Aquinas Church in Clunes in 1891. After the marriage, the newlyweds came to Melbourne and settled in Kew, an eastern suburb of Melbourne. There they bought an office/shop as well as a place to store goods and they started a fuel business which was to last over 60 years, until its eventual closure in 1958.
They had 6 children - Thomas Michael (1892), Francis William (1895), Monica (Mona) (1896), Leo (1901), Marguerite (Madge) (1903) and Kathleen (1906).
Michael died in 1954 and Margaret died in 1956 and was buried at Kew with her husband.

This grew into a large enterprise supplying wood, coal, coke, sawn timber, chaff and grain, sand, gravel, etc. The business thrived in the expanding Melbourne of the early twentieth century and finally closed its doors in the late 1950's, a victim of the changing face of Melbourne's fuel economy. This invoice, from 1958, is from shortly before the business was closed.

1900 - Kevin Carrucan first Assumption boarder152 viewsKevin James O'Doherty Carrucan, the oldest of 5 children born to Patrick Joseph Carrucan and Agnes Mary Hardbottle, was born in Pyalong, Victoria, on the 6th March 1885.
He arrived at Assumption College, Kilmore, Victoria, on the 15th August 1900 as the first boarder to board at that famous college. He was brought to the school from Lancefield by Fr. Farrelly, the then Parish Priest of Kilmore and the founder of Assumption. There were no more than five boarders at this point with about 50 day students. Kevin was Dux of the School in 1900.
Whilst appointed to Traralgon Creek State School, he met his future wife Rubina Beaton who lived in nearby Koornalla. They married on 22nd June 1910 at Traralgon. Kevin and Rubina had four children Patricia, Donald, Enid and John. Kevin then went on to join the Commonwealth Public Service which was then developing in Melbourne because Canberra had not yet been founded. In the mid 1920's he went overseas to take up a position as the Secretary to the Australian Ambassador at Australia House in London. Rubina and the children lived in Brugge in Belgium whilst Kevin lived in London.
He returned to Australia in March 1931 and returned to work at Canberra in November 1931 but died soon after.
He was a grandson of Peter Carrucan and Hannah Woods.
This photo appeared in a 1984 Assumption College Newsletter, obtained when our son was attending the same College and was given to us by Kath and Grahame Murphy.

Their seventh child Robert (b 1936) married Patricia Bracey-Finch and they had 5 children of their own - Bernadette (b 1959), Anthony (b 1961), Maryanne (b 1963), Robert (b 1967) and Claire (b 1969). This photo, taken in 2006, shows Robert on his 70th birthday with his extended family.

He met Mary Ellen Angus from Hawthorn in 1927 and they married in January 1935 at Immaculate Conception Church, Hawthorn. Mary and Leo had one daughter, Mary Therese, in April 1938 but, ten days after giving birth, Mary died of cancer. In 1940, Leo married Dorothy Hopper and they lived happily as a family at 73 Edgevale Rd, Kew. This photo shows Leo in relaxed mode with his daughter Mary, sometime around 1950.
Leo died suddenly on 27th March 1958 from a heart attack while sitting in his truck at the Alphington Quarries. He was only 57 years of age. He was buried in the Kew Cemetery. Leo is remembered fondly by his daughter Mary as a wonderful father and a wonderful husband to Dorothy who subsequently died in 1979.
Leo was a grandson of Peter Carrucan and Hannah Woods.

In February 2009, huge bushfires swept through Victoria, destroying many towns including their own. In an ironic twist of fate, Kevin Joseph is the grandson of Thomas Michael Carrucan who fought at Fromelles with the Australian forces in the First World War while Adolph Hitler was at Fromelles as part of the German fighting forces.

Fromelle Statue in Melbourne131 viewsThomas Michael Carrucan, born 1892, was the eldest of the 6 children born to Michael and Margaret Carrucan of Kew and was thus one of the grand children of Peter Carrucan and Hannah Woods. He served in WWI and was in the battle of Fromelles, which occurred on 19-20 July 1916. This was perhaps the most harrowing battle ever undertaken by Australian soldiers. Luckily he returned to his family after the war.
This statue, commemorating that battle, is at the Shrine in Melbourne.
