2016 Jim McMahon of Kinglake37 viewsSadly, we lost our last third generation link to the early Carrucan settlers, when James Peter (Jim) McMahon of Kinglake died on 4th August 2017, aged 97. A grandson of original settlers Peter and Hannah Carrucan, Jim had lived all his life in Kinglake, north of Melbourne. His mother Margaret (Mattie) Carrucan was the youngest of 10 children born to Peter and Hannah. Jim and wife Bess were farmers. Jim is survived by Bess, along with their 6 children James, Noelene, Josephine, Anthony, Peter and Michael, along with 17 grand children and 8 great grand children.

1925 - Wedding Certificate MONICA CARRUCAN - JOSEPH PATRICK HAGAN37 views1925 Marriage Certificate for Monica Carrucan (1896-1976) and Joseph Patrick Hogan (1898-1990) which has been passed onto us by John Richardson.
Monica Carrucan was the grand daughter of Peter Carrucan and Hannah Woods.
Mona and Joe had a long marriage, producing children Margaret, Bernard, Gregory and Frank.
They are both buried in the Field of Mars Cemetery, Ryde, NSW. Cemetery records show both Monica and Joseph are buried in the C of E section – Lawn 4 – Grave 2113.

In 1939, he married Ellen Monica Beeson and they had 9 children. He died in 1991 and is buried in Auckland. He was a great great grandson of Peter Carrucan and Hannah Woods.

This grew into a large enterprise supplying wood, coal, coke, sawn timber, chaff and grain, sand, gravel, etc. The business thrived in the expanding Melbourne of the early twentieth century and finally closed its doors in the late 1950's, a victim of the changing face of Melbourne's fuel economy. This invoice, from 1904, shows the letterhead in the early days of the business.

Post war, he worked on boats between Australia and New Zealand for a number of years before finally settling in New Zealand and marrying Agnes Beryl Connolly (1905-1986). They had 13 children, thus founding what is now a very strong New Zealand branch of the Carrucan clan.
This photo was taken in 1915 before he left Australia for overseas service.

He met Mary Ellen Angus from Hawthorn in 1927 and they married in January 1935 at Immaculate Conception Church, Hawthorn. This photo shows Mary and Leo on their wedding day.
Mary and Leo had one daughter, Mary Therese, in April 1938 but, ten days after giving birth, Mary died of cancer. In 1940, Leo married Dorothy Hopper and Leo and Dorothy brought up his young daughter Mary.
Leo died suddenly on 27th March 1958 from a heart attack while sitting in his truck at the Alphington Quarries. He was only 57 years of age. He was buried in the Kew Cemetery.
His daughter Mary married Thomas Joseph Holden and they in turn have 3 children Andrew (b 1966), Janet (b 1968) and Meaghan (b 1972).

Peter wore the number 6 guernsey for Collingwood Football Club from 1965 to 1975. In his 12 year career with the Magpies, he played 180 games, led the club's goal kicking in eight consecutive seasons (1967-1974), won the club's best and fairest player award in 1970, won an All-Australian vest in 1972 and won the John Coleman medal (the most goals kicked in the season by any player in the AFL) in 1972 and 1973.
Regarded as one of the first 'pop stars' in the game, he was a favourite of the Magpie Army due to his supreme skills.

1920s - Arduli in Johns Street Eltham36 viewsAlan Sheehan has forwarded this photo of the house 'Arduli' in John St, Eltham, where Fanny Carrucan (1900-1929) and her husband Jim Jenkins lived. Fanny was a grand daughter of Peter Carrucan and Hannah Woods.
The photo is from a scrapbook with photo's from the 1920's to mid 1930's. The album was given to the Eltham historical society a number of years ago by an elderly lady named Heather Jenkins.

Guy Mannering36 viewsThe U.S. ship Guy Mannering was built at New York by William H. Webb, New York, for Robert L. Taylor and Nathaniel W. Merrill's line (called in Liverpool the Black Star Line) of sailing packets between New York and Liverpool, and launched in March 1849.
The ship plied other routes apart from Liverpool – New York. Patrick Carrucan, with his bride Mary and his younger brother Peter, sailed from Liverpool on the Guy Mannering in 1857 on their 90 day voyage to Australia. The shipping records list the travellers, who were not Assisted Migrants, as follows:

This photo shows the seventh child, Elizabeth Martha Wiltshire nee West, with her two children Bertha Frances Wiltshire and Clive Gordon Wiltshire. Bertha was born in 1909 and Clive in 1910. Clive died in QLD in 1998. Bertha died in Sandringham in 2001.

2010 - Gravestones Thomas & Agnes Beryl Carrucan35 viewsThomas Michael Carrucan, born 1892, was the eldest of the 6 children born to Michael and Margaret Carrucan of Kew. He was a grand child of Peter Carrucan and Hannah Woods.
When World War One broke out, many young Australian men ansered the call, Thomas Michael Carrucan amongst them. After a distinguished 4 years serving overseas, he returned home. Alas, there did not seem to be any place for him in the family business so he eventually decided to settle in New Zealand where he had a mate.
Once there, he met and married Agnes Beryl (Beryl) Connolly and and they had 13 children, Leo, Joe, Ted, Brian, Mary, Kathleen, Robert, Maura, Peter, Andrew, Janet, Elizabeth and Anne.
Thomas died on 25th March 1951 in an Auckland hospital, aged 58. Beryl died in 1986, aged 80.
Our strong New Zealand line is descended from Thomas and Beryl.

Colemans Corner, Eltham - site or original house of John Coleman and Bridget Carrucan34 viewsUnfortunately, in subsequent years, roadworks straightened the road and this corner and the house no longer exists. Coleman Crescent is the only reminder to this early pioneering farm.
Fittingly there is still a farm within the grounds of the old farm, namely the Edendale Farm and Community Centre.

1943 - US Air Corps flying crew - John D Speakman front second from right34 viewsJohn D Speakman, (known to his family as Jack) was the second child born to Mary and Walter Speakman in 1924. When he came of age, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps and was assigned to the 701st Bomb Squadron, 445th Bomb Group, 2nd Air Division and assigned the position of tail gunner as part of a B-24 bomber crew.

Shot down on 24th February 1944, he was interned as a POW until the end of the war. In November 1946, he married Betty Lee Millman. Between 1947 and 1965, they had a family of 9 children, raising them all in the Catholic faith.
Jack had the pleasure to see all of his grandchildren born but he passed away on 29th September 1992, just short of seeing the first of his great grandchildren.

1998 James Carrucan34 viewsPatrick and Bridget Carrucan had six children, Michael (1828), Patrick (1831), Bridget (1833), Peter (1837), Martha and Mary.
Their eldest son Michael stayed in Fanore and married Mary Droney, a local girl. Eventually the family farm was passed to him and in time it passed to his son Dennis and then to his son James.
This memorial card was issued to mark the death of James in 1998.
Today, James' son Patrick (Patsy), his wife Anne and their family occupy the property, which has expanded some five-fold from when Patrick senior first husbanded it.

1880s late - Patrick Carrucan and Mary Carrucan (nee O'Brien)34 viewsPatrick CARRUCAN (1831-1894) married Mary O'BRIEN (1838-1927) some time around 1856 at Ennistimon, County Clare, Ireland. She was 19 and he was 27.
Later in that same year of 1856, they left Ireland, bound for Australia. Once there, they joined Patrick's sister Bridget and her husband John Coleman in Eltham.
This photo, taken some time in the late 1880's shows an elderly couple formally posing for a Richmond photographer. Is this Patrick and Mary? Investigations are continuing.

2005 Mgr Bernie O'Regan Obituary34 viewsWhen Monsignor Bernie O'Regan died in 2005 at the age of 79, it marked the first military funeral at the Melbourne General Cemetery that any of the curators could recall in their many decades of service. Melbourne Archbishop Denis Hart led the service for him at St John the Baptist Church in Clifton Hill.
