1940-02 Culla Hill Home Beautiful - Front Parlour36 viewsThis photo, taken from The Home Beautiful magazine issue of 1st February 1940, shows the front parlour of Culla Hill at that time. By then the property had passed out of Sweeney hands.

The parlor, entrance passage and bedroom were transformed by the then owners into one long living room across the front of the house. The landscape window was previously the site of an open fireplace. Eastern rugs and early Victorian and early colonial furniture made for appropriate furnishings.
1894_-_Agnes_Mary_Carrucan_School_Certificate.jpg
1894 - Agnes Mary Carrucan School Certificate36 viewsAgnes Mary Carrucan (1881 - 1917), the tenth and last child of Peter and Hannah Carrucan, was born in 1881 at Eltham. This certificate, dated March 1894, states that she had reached the required standard as specified by 'The Education Act 1890' and was now exempt from compulsory school attendance.
On 1st December 1900, Agnes Mary Carrucan married Thomas Albert Hayes in Heidelberg. He was a son of John Hayes and Ellen Houlahan and also a tenth child.
Thomas and Agnes had six children:
Francis Vincent (1901-1965)
John Joseph (1905-1985)
Thomas Albert (1907-1954)
Percival (1909-1909)
Selwyn James (1912-1986)
Mary Agnes (1915-1991)

On June 24th 1917, Agnes Mary was to die tragically. While working in their garden at Eltham Road with Thomas, a menacing brown snake crawled under a fence. Thomas pushed Agnes out of the way down an embankment. She fell and went into premature labour and both she and the baby died.

Peter Cuffley discusses this photo as follows

It is a wonderful image and reflects the remarkable ability with wood the early Sweeneys had. The homemade seat is in a tradition of Australian bush furniture which Kevin Carney and I wrote about in our 1974 book ‘A CATALOGUE AND HISTORY OF COTTAGE CHAIRS IN AUSTRALIA.’ Not only is it a classic example of hand whittled ingenuity, in the background is a fine example of a picket fence which is entirely made of hand-split bush timber. The posts and the rails are all hand-split and not milled, but even better, every single picket is hand-split! To add further to the importance of the picture, the seat is actually in the Irish hand-made furniture tradition. In 1993 Claudia Kinmonth brought out a superb book called ‘IRISH COUNTRY FURNITURE 1700-1950.’ An up-dated edition was released in 2020 titled ‘Irish Country Furniture and Furnishings 1700-2000.’

_Culla_Hill_original_hut_-_Ellen_and_Kathleen_Sweeney_Michael_and_Frank_Carrucan_circa_1915.jpg
1910 approx - Culla Hill original hut - Ellen (Nana) and Kathleen (Cassie) Sweeney with Michael Carrucan and Michael O'Heare34 viewsNana (Ellen Sweeney) and Cassie (Kathleen Sweeney) proudly pose in front of this humble structure, the first hut built by Thomas Sweeney, possibly as early as 1843. John Francis Sweeney was probably born therein.
The two other figures are Mick Carrucan (who married Mary Sweeney in 1910) and Michael O'Heare, a well known local solicitor who was one of the groomsmen at Michael Carrucan's wedding in 1910.

These two photographs of the hut at Culla Hill are also prefect illustrations of the Sweeney family’s use of bush timber. Not only is the hut made split palings, split shingles and hand whittled slabs, the picket fence in the background is again made of split hardwood. We must make the best of these photographs to show how hard-working pioneers like our ancestors could turn the timber on their land into materials for their needs rather than purchase the products of commercial mills. It was the kind of ‘make-do’ ingenuity which bespeaks their humble Irish origins.

It was passed onto us by Karen Hough who comments:
This image was given to me by a family member, Barry Smith, who has the original image (an old postcard, as I believe they used to do to photos). It belonged to his grandmother, Elizabeth Martha West who was the 7th child of William and Martha. She was raised there and returned there to live for a while when her husband Claude Wiltshire went off to WW1. William West's name is clearly visible on the fascia board. It was taken some time after the other image of the hotel as the verandah above the post office looks very saggy!

Te Henga or Bethels Beach33 viewsMatthew Carrucan advises that
'Te Henga is significant because we used to go there with (my Father) and the Auckland athletic club and they would run along that beach and we would head off behind the beach into the truly massive dunes.
A trip to Auckland is not complete with out at least one visit to one of these beaches.
In the 50's at night in West Auckland you could apparently hear the surf breaking.'
