1950s - Margaret and Michael Carrucan152 viewsMichael Martin Carrucan (1866-1954), the fourth child of Peter and Hannah Carrucan, married Margaret Lynch at the St Thomas Aquinas Church in Clunes in 1891. After the marriage, the newlyweds came to Melbourne and settled in Kew, an eastern suburb of Melbourne. There they bought an office/shop as well as a place to store goods and they started a fuel business which was to last over 60 years, until its eventual closure in 1958.
They had 6 children - Thomas Michael (1892), Francis William (1895), Monica (Mona) (1896), Leo (1901), Marguerite (Madge) (1903) and Kathleen (1906).

1958 - Kew Wood Yard Invoice152 viewsMichael and Margaret Carrucan (Michael was the fourth child of Peter Carrucan and Hannah Woods) settled in Kew and started a small business called 'M Carrucan Fuel & Produce Merchant'. This grew into a large enterprise supplying wood, coal, coke, sawn timber, chaff and grain, sand, gravel, etc. The business thrived in the expanding Melbourne of the early twentieth century and finally closed its doors in the late 1950's, a victim of the changing face of Melbourne's fuel economy. This invoice, from 1958, is from shortly before the business was closed.

1865 circa Sweeney heirloom emu egg - view 1152 viewsThis traditionally carved emu egg was passed onto Mary Carrucan (nee Sweeney) by her father John Sweeney. It was on display in this old pink vase in the dining room at the Dalton Street farm house for some 60 years. It is believed that the egg was given to John Sweeney in the 1850s by the local First Peoples. The vase itself was also a gift to John Sweeney and his wife Ellen Kenney.
This is 1 of 3 views of the emu egg, showing the full extent of the carving.

1880s - Depression Work in Research - the creation of the aquaduct151 viewsLocal farmers had to supplement incomes where possible, especially during the Great Depression of the late 1880's. At that time, able men travelled far and wide in an effort to bring in extra money. One of the Depression initiatives was the building of the aquaduct that carried water from the Maroondah reservoir though the Eltham and Research areas and ended at Reservoir.. This photo shows a gang of men, including my grandfather Michael Carrucan (so I was told by older family members) working at Research.

1900 - Kevin Carrucan first Assumption boarder151 viewsKevin James O'Doherty Carrucan, the oldest of 5 children born to Patrick Joseph Carrucan and Agnes Mary Hardbottle, was born in Pyalong, Victoria, on the 6th March 1885.
He arrived at Assumption College, Kilmore, Victoria, on the 15th August 1900 as the first boarder to board at that famous college. He was brought to the school from Lancefield by Fr. Farrelly, the then Parish Priest of Kilmore and the founder of Assumption. There were no more than five boarders at this point with about 50 day students. Kevin was Dux of the School in 1900.
Whilst appointed to Traralgon Creek State School, he met his future wife Rubina Beaton who lived in nearby Koornalla. They married on 22nd June 1910 at Traralgon. Kevin and Rubina had four children Patricia, Donald, Enid and John. Kevin then went on to join the Commonwealth Public Service which was then developing in Melbourne because Canberra had not yet been founded. In the mid 1920's he went overseas to take up a position as the Secretary to the Australian Ambassador at Australia House in London. Rubina and the children lived in Brugge in Belgium whilst Kevin lived in London.
He returned to Australia in March 1931 and returned to work at Canberra in November 1931 but died soon after.
He was a grandson of Peter Carrucan and Hannah Woods.
This photo appeared in a 1984 Assumption College Newsletter, obtained when our son was attending the same College and was given to us by Kath and Grahame Murphy.

1980-01 Sweeneys Photos - Burston Collection151 viewsThis photo from the Burston Collection shows how idyllic 'Culla Hill' was in January, 1980. It is remarkable to think that this location is a mere 14 miles from the Melbourne GPO, yet there are no signs of urban development. Thankfully, 'Sweeneys Flats' are now preserved forever as riverside parkland.

1930 circa at Culla Hill - Nellie Sweeney, Nellie Oliver, Nellie Murray and Nellie (Nana) Hooley nee Sweeney - Nana owned Culla Hill at this stage151 viewsA wonderful 1930 photo showing 4 Nellies on the front verandah of the Culla Hill homestead.
Ellen Mary (Nessie) Sweeney (1869-1955) - daughter of Patrick Carrucan and Mary Fitzsimons
Ellen (Nellie) Oliver nee Smith (1885-1956) - daughter of Jack Smith and Annie Sweeney
Ellen Mary (Nellie) Murray (1907-1938) - daughter of James Murray and Julia Brennan
Ellen Irene (Nelly) Hooley nee Sweeney (1874-1940) - daughter of John Sweeney and Ellen Kenney
A note on Ellen Mary (Nessie) Sweeney. She never married and worked at the Foy & Gibson factory in Collingwood. In later life, she lived with her niece Nelly Oliver so to save confusion people called her 'Nessie'.
I notice in lots of old references that people used both spellings, Nellie and Nelly. Patrick 1838-1919 calls his sister Ellen 'Ellie'. so that's another variation!

1960s - painting of Dalton St farm150 viewsPeter Cuffley explains the origin of this painting of the Dalton St farm in Eltham: My brother's great friend, Peter Hurry, who grew up in a mud brick house on a property down Sweeneys Lane, rang me the other day to arrange for me to send one of my books to his friend Hamish Knox, son of Alistair Knox. While visiting Hamish at Christmas Hills, Peter noticed a painting on the wall of a familiar place. Hamish said that his older sister Gabriella (Gabe) had painted it years ago, and that it was of Jack Carrucan's house in Dalton Street.
We suspect it dates from the 1960s.

The family story was that the vase itself was a gift to John Sweeney and Ellen Kenney on the occasion of their wedding on 10 Nov 1868, but it looks to be from a later time, so that is probably apocryphal.
