2000_-_Fanore_at_Sunset.jpg
2000 - Fanore at Sunset29 viewsThis photo was given to us by Shane MacNamara, whose grandfather Patrick MacNamara was born in Fanore. He is related to both the Woods and Carrucans in Fanore. He commented:
Hannah Woods was the sister of my ancestor Frances Woods. Frances Woods married John Casey and their daughter Mary married my great grandfather Patrick McNamara.
I've also gone to Fanore. The first time was in 1982 where I spent an afternoon with Jim and Nancy Carrucan. One of my great aunts was living with the Carrucans. Unfortunately, I'm sketchy on which one and I think she was Nancy Carrucan's mother.
It's interesting you mention the Carrucans connection with fishing. I can vividly remember Jim Carrucan showing me a big catch of fish from the previous day. He mentioned at the time that he was the only one in the village who went fishing.
My grandfather (Patrick MacNamara) could not swim and as young children they were told stories of sea monsters presumably to keep them from venturing too close to the sea. Maybe that is why the Carrucans were the only fishermen in the village.
Cliffs_of_Moher-3.jpg
Cliffs of Moher29 viewsThese majestic cliffs, amongst the most magnificent stretches of cliff scenery in Ireland, front the Atlantic to a height of nearly 200m and extend for a distance of 8km from Hag's Head due west of Liscannor to a point beyond O'Brien's Tower. They take their name from a ruined promontory fort, Mothar, which was demolished during the Napoleonic wars to make room for a signal tower.

Willsmere29 viewsThe Kew Lunatic Asylum was a place where many Carrucans worked, either as nurses, farmers, gardeners, warders or as general hands. As you can see from the photo, it was a huge establishment and was found in Kew on the southern banks of the Yarra River.
Operational from 1871 to 1988, Kew was one of the largest asylums ever built in Australia. Later known as Willsmere, the complex of buildings were constructed between 1864 and 1872 to the design of architects G.W. Vivian and Frederick Kawerau of the Victorian Public Works Office to house the growing number of 'lunatics, inebriates and idiots' in the Colony of Victoria.
Kew continued to operate throughout the 20th century as a 'Hospital for the Insane', 'Mental Hospital' or 'Psychiatric Hospital', treating acute, long-term and geriatric patients until it closed in December 1988. The main building and surrounding grounds were sold by the State Government in the 1980s and were redeveloped as residential properties.

1960s - painting of Dalton St farm29 viewsPeter Cuffley explains the origin of this painting of the Dalton St farm in Eltham: My brother's great friend, Peter Hurry, who grew up in a mud brick house on a property down Sweeneys Lane, rang me the other day to arrange for me to send one of my books to his friend Hamish Knox, son of Alistair Knox. While visiting Hamish at Christmas Hills, Peter noticed a painting on the wall of a familiar place. Hamish said that his older sister Gabriella (Gabe) had painted it years ago, and that it was of Jack Carrucan's house in Dalton Street.

2010 - Fr Frank ORegan chalice29 viewsThis article was published in the July 2010 edition of the Diocese of Sale newspaper 'Catholic Life'. It was the Sale Diocese in eastern Victoria where Father Frank ministered for so many years, from 1949 to 1985. The chalice, donated by Frank's family, is still in use now and provides a fitting reminder to his years of service to the Catholic community of so many parishes in that region.

It was passed onto his daughter Mary Carrucan) who in turn passed it onto her son Jack. Jack passed it onto his sister Betty (Erickson) who in turn passed it onto her son Tim Erickson. It is currently being looked after by Tim. It documents the sort of subsistence farming which framed the lives of the early Eltham settlers. The diet was one of cutting wood, ploughing, planting or digging up potatoes, taking produce or wood to Melbourne to sell and the various special occasions when someone visited or the family visited someone.
