1970 - Dalton Street Farm149 viewsPatrick Carrucan and Mary O'Brien settled on a farm in Eltham, with their farmhouse on the corner of Dalton and Bibles Street. The farm stayed in the family until their grandson John Francis (Jack) Carrucan died in 1976. At that stage what remained of the property was subdivided and sold.
This photo is taken from Mt Pleasant Rd, looks across the farm paddocks towards Dalton St and gives a side view of the old farm house.

Ned died in 1908 and Susan moved to Brighton in 1910, firstly living in 'Rothwell' at 143 Church St and then at 'Wyuna' in Black Street. This historic property is still occupied and these photos, taken recently, show its grand nature.

Home / Peter Carrucan Line / 149 viewsLeo Carrucan, the fourth child of Margaret and Michael Carrucan of Kew, was born on 23rd December 1901. He met Mary Ellen Angus from Hawthorn in 1927 and they married in January 1935 at Immaculate Conception Church, Hawthorn. Mary and Leo had one daughter, Mary Therese, in April 1938 but, ten days after giving birth, Mary died of cancer. In 1940, Leo married Dorothy Hopper and they lived happily as a family at 73 Edgevale Rd, Kew. This photo shows Leo in relaxed mode with his daughter Mary, sometime around 1950.
Leo died suddenly on 27th March 1958 from a heart attack while sitting in his truck at the Alphington Quarries. He was only 57 years of age. He was buried in the Kew Cemetery. Leo is remembered fondly by his daughter Mary as a wonderful father and a wonderful husband to Dorothy who subsequently died in 1979.
Leo was a grandson of Peter Carrucan and Hannah Woods.

Melbourne Archbishop Denis Hart led the service for him at St John the Baptist Church in Clifton Hill.
Bernie was a great grandson of Peter Carrucan.

This photo shows the first communion of Elizabeth Agatha (Betty) Carrucan) in 1923, at age 7. It is actually a very large framed photo that is with Betty's son Tim. It used to hang on the wall of the family farm in Dalton St Eltham.

1945 - Joe Carrucan in NSW148 viewsJoseph Thomas Carrucan (1903-1960), third youngest child of Patrick and Ellen Carrucan, was born in 1904. In 1929 he married Eileen Mary Farrelly the only girl in a family of seven boys and they subsequently lived in 60A Gold Street Collingwood. They had six children: Helen (1932), Ivan (1933), Patricia (1935), Kathleen (1937), Michael (1942) and Maree (1947).
About 1945 he wanted to visit his eldest son, Ivan, who was in training with the Christian Brothers near Sydney. As the family had no car at the time, he rode his bike from Melbourne to Sydney. He rode off with a frying pan strapped across his back and a bag that contained among other items, all the family's sausages and a packet of self-addressed, stamped envelopes. This photo was taken in Sydney upon his arrival. When he returned home to Melbourne, he was ok apart from a badly sunburnt face.
Joe was a grandson of Patrick Carrucan and Mary O'Brien.

It was passed onto his daughter Mary Carrucan) who in turn passed it onto her son Jack. Jack passed it onto his sister Betty (Erickson) who in turn passed it onto her son Tim Erickson. It is currently being looked after by Tim. It documents the sort of subsistence farming which framed the lives of the early Eltham settlers. The diet was one of cutting wood, ploughing, planting or digging up potatoes, taking produce or wood to Melbourne to sell and the various special occasions when someone visited or the family visited someone.

They are both buried in the Field of Mars Cemetery, Ryde, NSW. Cemetery records show both Monica and Joseph are buried in the C of E section – Lawn 4 – Grave 2113.

This farm, owned by Michael Carrucan, stayed in the family until the 1970s when my uncle Jack died and it was split up and sold.
The horses were the most important pieces of machinery available and teams and drays were prized possessions. My uncle Jack kept two beautiful drays in his sheds long after the horses had gone. He could not bear to part with them.

In February 2009, huge bushfires swept through Victoria, destroying many towns including their own. Bessie and Jim were amongst the lucky ones whose properties were spared and they sheltered many of the locals in their house, thus saving many lives.
