1880s - Depression Work in Research - the creation of the aquaduct
Local farmers had to supplement incomes where possible, especially during the Great Depression of the late 1880's. At that time, able men travelled far and wide in an effort to bring in extra money. One of the Depression initiatives was the building of the aquaduct that carried water from the Maroondah reservoir though the Eltham and Research areas and ended at Reservoir.. This photo shows a gang of men, including my grandfather Michael Carrucan (so I was told by older family members) working at Research.
