1880s late - Patrick Carrucan and Mary Carrucan (nee O'Brien)34 viewsPatrick CARRUCAN (1831-1894) married Mary O'BRIEN (1838-1927) some time around 1856 at Ennistimon, County Clare, Ireland. She was 19 and he was 27.

Later in that same year of 1856, they left Ireland, bound for Australia. Once there, they joined Patrick's sister Bridget and her husband John Coleman in Eltham.

1880s - Depression Work in Research - the creation of the aquaduct30 viewsLocal farmers had to supplement incomes where possible, especially during the Great Depression of the late 1880's. At that time, able men travelled far and wide in an effort to bring in extra money. One of the Depression initiatives was the building of the aquaduct that carried water from the Maroondah reservoir though the Eltham and Research areas and ended at Reservoir.. This photo shows a gang of men, including my grandfather Michael Carrucan (so I was told by older family members) working at Research.

1890s Ned Kent and wife Susan (nee Carrucan) with adopted child John Thomas Flanagan27 viewsSusan Carrucan (1862 - 1943), the third eldest child of Patrick Carrucan and Mary O'Brien, married Edward Shae (Ned) Kent (1858 - 1907) in 1881. Susan and Ned had no children of their own so they adopted John Thomas Flanagan who was orphaned at the age of 8 years, in 1887. He grew up with Sue and became a solicitor, working in Middle Brighton.

She later married John Francis Carrucan and a stong Carrucan line has ensued. The photo also shows her mother Honora Doherty (nee Hurley), born in Co. Clare in Ireland in 1845, and her other 3 siblings Mary (Cissy) - b 1880, Patrick - b 1878, and Cornelius - b 1884. Honora and her husband Cornelius were both born in Co. Clare but migrated to Australia and all the children were born in Creswick near Ballarat (Victoria).

1900 circa - Dalton St farm, Eltham - horses and drays at work23 viewsAn old photo given to me by my mother, it shows horses and drays at work in the paddocks of the family farm in Dalton St Eltham, circa 1900. This farm, owned by Michael Carrucan, stayed in the family until the 1970s when my uncle Jack died and it was split up and sold.
The horses were the most important pieces of machinery available and teams and drays were prized possessions. My uncle Jack kept two beautiful drays in his sheds long after the horses had gone. He could not bear to part with them.

1900 approx Lower Plenty Hotel Ned Kent on horse, Susan Kent nee Carrucan probably sitting on steps24 viewsSusan Carrucan (1862 - 1943), the third eldest child of Patrick Carrucan and Mary O'Brien, married Edward Shae (Ned) Kent (1858 - 1907) in 1881. Ned Kent owned the Plenty Pub and pubs in Diamond Creek, Christmas Hills and Bulleen and an orchard in Eltham. He is shown seated on a horse outside the Plenty Pub at Lower Plenty while we think it is Susan seated on the steps with a group of others. As he died in 1907, aged 49, this photo must predate that date.

She met and married Edward Shae Kent (Ned) at Eltham in 1881. Ned Kent was born at Eltham circa 1858 and owned the Plenty Hotel, a pub in Diamond Creek, Christmas Hills and Bulleen and an orchard in Eltham.

She eventually died in 1927 aged 89.

Ned died in 1908 and Susan moved to Brighton in 1910, owing a house called 'Rothwell' at 143 Church St. She lived there until the 1920s and we assume this photo dates from that period.

1914 - Richard Donal Lane26 viewsRichard Donal (Dick) Lane (1885-1966), the grandson of Patrick Carrucan and Mary O'Brien, was born in Eltham in 1885 but moved with his family to Western Australia. He was one of 13 children born to Bridget Carrucan (1858-1949) and Michael Lane (1876-).
He married Anna Maria (Mary) Harrington (1888-1976) in 1913 while studying in Ireland and together, they lived a long life. Dick eventually died in 1966 while Mary continued on until 1976.

1915 approx - Richard Donal (Dick) Lane 1885 - 196626 viewsRichard Donal (Dick) Lane, the grandson of Patrick Carrucan and Mary O'Brien, grew up in Eltham but moved to Western Australia with his parents in 1898, aged 13 years. They settled in Boulder where his parents established the bakery which became known as 'Lane Brothers Bread Factory'. He went to Ireland to study law at Trinity College, taking every prize for which he was eligible in his final year and taking articles at the Inns of Court. Returning to practice in WA, he was known as 'Dick of Dublin'.

1921 - Betty Carrucan and Nellie Sweeney - Eltham Elementary School Grades 1 & 226 viewsThe Eltham Elementary School in Dalton Street (School Number 209) had been started in the 1850s and was just a stone's throw from the Carrucan farms. All the Carrucan children attended and this photo of the 1921 Grade 1 and 2 class shows some 39 children ranging in ages from about 6 to 10. Betty Carrucan is fourth from the left in the second row from the front. Her aunt Nellie Sweeney is the teacher on the right.

On the far left is Nellie Murray, the sister of Jim Murray who was the last of the old Eltham relatives to die.

1927 - Obituary for Mary Carrucan nee OBrien1 viewsWith the passing of Mary Carrucan nee O'Brien,the widow of Patrick Carrucan, in 1927, the following comprehensive obituary was was published in the Hurstridge Advertiser, Friday 18 November 1927, page 5

DEATH OF ELTHAM PIONEER. MRS. MARY CARRUCAN.
On November 2 at Dalton St., Eltham, the death of Mrs. Mary Carrucan, relict of the late Patrick Carrucan, removed from our midst another of the fine old pioneers of this district. The deceased lady, who had reached the ripe age of ninety years, had been in failing health for the last two years, so that her demise was really a happy release. She and her late husband arrived in the colony from County Clare, Ireland, over 70 years ago, and settled in Eltham soon after their arrival. The latter pre-deceased her by 34 years. They reared a large family (two sons and seven daughters) who, with the exception of the elder son Michael, have all settled down elsewhere. Both the parents were very highly re-spected for their thrift and industry and soon acquired several blocks of land in and about Holloway's town ship, of which Dalton St. formed the southern boundary line. Like many of the early pioneers, the deceased lady was a fine type of helpmate, and was fond of outdoor life. When the Eltham tannery was in full swing, her husband was engaged as a first-class hand, but left this occupation to carry on fruit growing and mixed farming. Mrs. Carrucan's remains were laid to rest in the family portion of the Eltham cemetery, after a requiem service had been conducted in the local Catholic Church by the parish priest, the Rev. Fr. Lande. The funeral was attended by a large number of the family, relatives and friends, many of whom travelled long distances to pay the last tribute. The Rev. Fr. Lande also officiated at the grave. The funeral arrangements were very well carried out by Mr. Frank Usher, of Apps and Son, Fitzroy.

The lady in the front is her sister Ellen Sweeney who, being sick, came to live at Eltham in the late thirties or early forties. We think the other family are the Brasiers or Braziers who lived for a while in a cottage owned by one of our relatives at Research.

Clare to Eltham in the 1850's. Betty was born and grew up on the Dalton St farm of her parents Mick and Mary (nee Sweeney) Carrucan. This photo, taken in 1931, shows Betty on a dray at the farm.
