Mr. Stewart presented The Rhodes Ideal girls' prize, which was presented for the first time this year. This medal was donated by Mr. and Mrs. E. Smithers, to be awarded on the same basis as the medal which has been presented to the boys by Mr. A. Smithers for some years past. Discussion continued in next photo.

Con (b 1915 in Ballarat) was one of 7 children of John Francis (Jack) and Margaret (Maggie) Carrucan of Cheswick and was a great grandson of Patrick Carrucan who migrated from Co. Clare.

1934 - Betty Carrucan's graduation photo Melbourne Girls High School20 viewsAfter an outstanding school career, Betty Carrucan was awarded the Newman College Exhibition and a Senior Government Scholarship to attend Melbourne University. Thus she became the first girl from Eltham Higher Elementary School (and perhaps from Eltham overall) to attend University.
While at University, she taught her father Michael to read and write. She studied each night under the light of a hurricane lamp in the back room of the Eltham farmhouse and encountered considerable resistence within the family.

In 1929 he married Eileen Mary Farrelly the only girl in a family of seven boys and they subsequently lived in 60A Gold Street Collingwood. They had six children: Helen (1932), Ivan (1933), Patricia (1935), Kathleen (1937), Michael (1942) and Maree (1947).
About 1945 he wanted to visit his eldest son, Ivan, who was in training with the Christian Brothers near Sydney. As the family had no car at the time, he rode his bike from Melbourne to Sydney. He rode off with a frying pan strapped across his back and a bag that contained among other items, all the family's sausages and a packet of self-addressed, stamped envelopes. This photo was taken in Sydney upon his arrival. When he returned home to Melbourne, he was ok apart from a badly sunburnt face.
Joe was a grandson of Patrick Carrucan and Mary O'Brien.

As was the case in those days, her first teaching appointments were in the country regions. She spent a few years at each of Korrumburra, Leongatha, Wangaratta and Stawell. 1947 - Robert Calnin in Gibraltar22 viewsRobert Edward Calnin, born in 1929, was the the eldest (along with his twin brother John) of the children born to Maurice Calnin. He was a great grandson of Patrick Carrucan and Mary O'Brien. He enlisted in the Navy when he was 16. This picture was taken in Gibraltar when he was between 18 and 20 yrs old.
He later became a policeman, served in the Bundoora Mounted Branch and then at Buchan. When he retired, he took up farming at Buchan. He and his wife Betty had 2 children, Dale and Robyn. He died in 2010.

Molly (1916-1992) married Bernard Thomas Kelly (1916-1980) in 1941.
This photo shows the two bedroom home at their market garden at 109 Kingston Road, Heatherton, which was built by their brother in law Frank Mulvogue, the husband of Toppy. All their seven children were born while they lived there.

She married John O'Sullivan in 1953 in Kew and they had 3 children - Timothy (1954), Carmel (1957) and Michael (1964). Eileen died in 2000 in Ringwood.

They had six children: Helen (1932), Ivan (1933), Patricia (1935), Kathleen (1937), Michael (1942) and Maree (1947).
Joe was a very good boxer in his younger days and and he passed this knowledge on via his boxing shows. These began in 1941 at St Joseph's but moved to the Collingwood Town Hall from 1942 until 1956. For the last show, with the help of a committee, he filled the Festival Hall, varying the boxing and wrestling with singers and other variety acts.

Born in Cappagh, Baylin, Athlone County Westmeath, Ireland on 6th April, 1881, Mick was about 17 when he arrived in Australia.
An electrician by trade, he was always pottering on new projects. Even as his heart started to fail, he could still be found in the backyard working on bits and pieces. This photo, taken in the early 1950s, shows him tinkering while convalescing after a heart attack.
