1980 Robert Edward Calnin - policeman at Buchan27 viewsRobert Edward Calnin, born in 1929, was the the eldest (along with his twin brother John) of the children born to Maurice Calnin. He was a great grandson of Patrick Carrucan and Mary O'Brien. He became a policeman, served in the Bundoora Mounted Branch and then at Buchan. Riding a horse was essential for policing in the rugged mountain country of that area. When he retired, he took up farming at Buchan. He and his wife Betty had 2 children, Dale and Robyn. He died in 2010.
This is a photo of Bob when he was about to lead a procession through Buchan at the opening of a local festival. The year would be around 1979 to 1980.

After Melbourne Archbishop Denis Hart led a service for him at St John's in Clifton Hill, mourners went to the cemetery where an RAAF honour guard lined the main avenue, 26 Steyr rifles raised. His many decorations and medals, including his OBE, his air-commodore rank as RAAF Chaplain General and his service medals from Vietnam and Malaysia were also carried as part of the service. In February 2009, huge bushfires swept through Victoria, destroying many towns including their own. Bessie and Jim were amongst the lucky ones whose properties were spared and they sheltered many of the locals in their house, thus saving many lives. They were featured in a couple of Melbourne Herald Sun articles in the subsequent period. This photo is taken from one of those articles.

It was the Sale Diocese in eastern Victoria where Father Frank ministered for so many years, from 1949 to 1985. The chalice, donated by Frank's family, is still in use now and provides a fitting reminder to his years of service to the Catholic community of so many parishes in that region.

Mary Carrucan (nee Sweeney) is second from left with her eyes partially closed andher daughter Betty is in the front middle. Ellen (Nana) Sweeney is on the left, then Mary, then Nellie Oliver, then an unidentified schoolgirl, then Nessie (Ellen) Sweeney. We cannot think who the lady in the cane chair might be. It seems possible she is one of the relations on the Carrucan side.

On the left is Michael O'Heare, a well known local solicitor who was one of the groomsmen at Michael Carrucan's wedding (1910). Michael Carrucan is shown on the right and Michael Carrucan's mother Mary (nee O'Brien) who was born in 1838 in Ireland is in the middle. She would have been around 72 at this time. She eventually died in 1927 aged 89.

This photo was no doubt taken by Joseph Rance Douie during a weekend visit to Eltham somewhere around the 1910 period or slightly later.
