She later married John Francis Carrucan and a stong Carrucan line has ensued. The photo also shows her mother Honora Doherty (nee Hurley), born in Co. Clare in Ireland in 1845, and her other 3 siblings Mary (Cissy) - b 1880, Patrick - b 1878, and Cornelius - b 1884. Honora and her husband Cornelius were both born in Co. Clare but migrated to Australia and all the children were born in Creswick near Ballarat (Victoria).

1914 - Richard Donal Lane186 viewsRichard Donal (Dick) Lane (1885-1966), the grandson of Patrick Carrucan and Mary O'Brien, was born in Eltham in 1885 but moved with his family to Western Australia. He was one of 13 children born to Bridget Carrucan (1858-1949) and Michael Lane (1876-).
He married Anna Maria (Mary) Harrington (1888-1976) in 1913 while studying in Ireland and together, they lived a long life. Dick eventually died in 1966 while Mary continued on until 1976.

Jack and Maggie had 7 children, all born in Ballarat, except for Greg). Jack died in 1956. Children were Ivan Francis, Cornelius Patrick (Con), Mary Cecilia, Eileen, John, Theodora and Gregory.

All the Carrucan children attended and this photo of the 1921 Grade 1 and 2 class shows some 39 children ranging in ages from about 6 to 10. Betty Carrucan is fourth from the left in the second row from the front. Her aunt Nellie Sweeney is the teacher on the right.

Ned Kent owned the Plenty Pub and pubs in Diamond Creek, Christmas Hills and Bulleen and an orchard in Eltham. He is shown seated on a horse outside the Plenty Pub at Lower Plenty while we think it is Susan seated on the steps with a group of others. As he died in 1907, aged 49, this photo must predate that date.

Mick Carrucan (b 1960) is front left and this photo is taken probably not long before he died around 1942. His wife Mary Carrucan (nee Sweeney) is left back. The lady in the front is her sister Ellen Sweeney who, being sick, came to live at Eltham in the late thirties or early forties. We think the other family are the Brasiers or Braziers who lived for a while in a cottage owned by one of our relatives at Research.

1915 approx - Richard Donal (Dick) Lane 1885 - 1966168 viewsRichard Donal (Dick) Lane, the grandson of Patrick Carrucan and Mary O'Brien, grew up in Eltham but moved to Western Australia with his parents in 1898, aged 13 years. They settled in Boulder where his parents established the bakery which became known as 'Lane Brothers Bread Factory'. He went to Ireland to study law at Trinity College, taking every prize for which he was eligible in his final year and taking articles at the Inns of Court. Returning to practice in WA, he was known as 'Dick of Dublin'.

On the left is Michael O'Heare, a well known local solicitor who was one of the groomsmen at Michael Carrucan's wedding (1910). Michael Carrucan is shown on the right and Michael Carrucan's mother Mary (nee O'Brien) who was born in 1838 in Ireland is in the middle. She would have been around 72 at this time. She eventually died in 1927 aged 89.
This photo was no doubt taken by Joseph Rance Douie, a friend of Michael O'Heare. Joseph says on the back of the photo 'It is many years since I took this photo ...'

Frank is one of the children of Cornelius Patrick (Con) and Clare (nee McArdle) Carrucan and a grandson of Jack and Maggie (nee Doherty) Carrucan. He is one of the main cogs in the active family history group. Frank was born in 1948 and this photo shows him as a young man.

It seems possible she is one of the relations on the Carrucan side.

Susan and Ned had no children of their own. Susan reared or adopted John Thomas Flanagan who was orphaned by the age of 8 years, in 1887. He grew up with Sue and became a solicitor, working in Middle Brighton. This photo of him is probably taken around 1920.

1950 - Mick and Terry Erickson at the Eltham farmhouse at Dalton St163 viewsIn 1950 when Elizabeth Agatha (Betty) Erickson (nee Carrucan) was expecting her third baby (Timothy), she returned with her two older boys (Michael and Terence) from Captain's Flat to the relative safety of the Carrucan family farm in Eltham. The 3 boys were subsequently all brought up there on the Dalton St farm. This photo was taken outside the back door of the old farm house which I am sure is fondly remembered by many Carrucan relatives.

The farm stayed in the family until their grandson John Francis (Jack) Carrucan died in 1976. At that stage what remained of the property was subdivided and sold.

1966 - Jack Carrucan at Dalton St Eltham farmhouse162 viewsPatrick Carrucan's block was in Dalton Street in Eltham. This was not originally a Carrucan farm but was bought by the Carrucans in the 1850's from a farming family called Ball. The old homestead was on the corner of Bible and Dalton Streets and remained intact and occupied until Jack Carrucan died in 1976. The photo below shows Jack in front of the house. The photo shown was taken in 1966 and shows Jack at the front gate of the farmhouse, facing Bible St. All that remains now is the cyprus tree.

Born in Cappagh, Baylin, Athlone County Westmeath, Ireland on 6th April, 1881, Mick was about 17 when he arrived in Australia.
An electrician by trade, he was always pottering on new projects. Even as his heart started to fail, he could still be found in the backyard working on bits and pieces. This photo, taken in the early 1950s, shows him tinkering while convalescing after a heart attack.
