2009 - Bessie and Jim McMahon of Kinglake23 viewsJames Peter (Jim) McMAHON (1920-) married Elizabeth Mary (Bessie) EXTON (1925-) in 1946 and they live in Kinglake. In February 2009, huge bushfires swept through Victoria, destroying many towns including their own. Bessie and Jim were amongst the lucky ones whose properties were spared and they sheltered many of the locals in their house, thus saving many lives. They were featured in a couple of Melbourne Herald Sun articles in the subsequent period. This photo is taken from one of those articles.

He was a great grandson of Patrick Carrucan and Mary O'Brien. He enlisted in the Navy when he was 16. This picture was taken in Gibraltar when he was between 18 and 20 yrs old.
He later became a policeman, served in the Bundoora Mounted Branch and then at Buchan. When he retired, he took up farming at Buchan. He and his wife Betty had 2 children, Dale and Robyn. He died in 2010.

They went to live in Captains Flat in southern NSW where Gunnar worked on the Snowy Mountain Schema. Mick and Terry Erickson were born in that harsh and rugged environment and one further son, Tim, was born in Greensborough. Betty was born in Eltham in 1915 and was the granddaughter of Patrick Carrucan who migrated from Co. Clare.

In 1929 he married Eileen Mary Farrelly the only girl in a family of seven boys and they lived in 60a Gold Street Collingwood. They had six children: Helen (1932), Ivan (1933), Patricia (1935), Kathleen (1937), Michael (1942) and Maree (1947).

(Molly), Kathleen, Margaret (Peg), Michael (Mick), Malachi and Alicia.
Born in Cappagh, Baylin, Athlone County Westmeath, Ireland on 6th April, 1881, Mick was about 17 when he arrived in Australia.
An electrician by trade, he was always pottering on new projects. Even as his heart started to fail, he could still be found in the backyard working on bits and pieces. This photo, taken in the early 1950s, shows him tinkering while convalescing after a heart attack.

This photo was taken outside the back door of the old farm house which I am sure is fondly remembered by many Carrucan relatives.

1994 July - Brother Pat Smith22 viewsyles Patrick (Pat) Smith (1935 -) entered the Christian Brothers' Juniorate at 15 and subsequently taught in various States in Australia and in New Zealand. Due to his health he eventually moved north and worked as a pastoral associate in Charleville, Queensland and then in Texas where he celebrated his Golden Jubilee in 1999. He was ordained a Catholic priest in 2003, and has now retired to Toowoomba.
This photo, taken in 1994, is from his days with the Christian Brothers.

2005 - Mgr Bernie O'Regan 26 gun salute22 viewsAs a sign of the respect in which Mgr Bernie O'Regan was held, he was granted a full military funeral, the first held at Melbourne General Cemetery for many many years. After Melbourne Archbishop Denis Hart led a service for him at St John's in Clifton Hill, mourners went to the cemetery where an RAAF honour guard lined the main avenue, 26 Steyr rifles raised. His many decorations and medals, including his OBE, his air-commodore rank as RAAF Chaplain General and his service medals from Vietnam and Malaysia were also carried as part of the service. The service concluded with a 26 gun salute and a live sounding of the Last Post.Bernie was a great grandson of Peter Carrucan.

Mick Carrucan (b 1960) is front left and this photo is taken probably not long before he died around 1942. His wife Mary Carrucan (nee Sweeney) is left back. The lady in the front is her sister Ellen Sweeney who, being sick, came to live at Eltham in the late thirties or early forties. We think the other family are the Brasiers or Braziers who lived for a while in a cottage owned by one of our relatives at Research.

About 1945 he wanted to visit his eldest son, Ivan, who was in training with the Christian Brothers near Sydney. As the family had no car at the time, he rode his bike from Melbourne to Sydney. He rode off with a frying pan strapped across his back and a bag that contained among other items, all the family's sausages and a packet of self-addressed, stamped envelopes. This photo was taken in Sydney upon his arrival. When he returned home to Melbourne, he was ok apart from a badly sunburnt face.
Joe was a grandson of Patrick Carrucan and Mary O'Brien.

1946 - Betty Carrucan Basketball team Stawell High School21 viewsCareer opportunities for women were few in the late 1940s and Betty (Elizabeth Agatha) Carrucan embarked on a teaching career after becoming the first Eltham girl to graduate from Melbourne University. As was the case in those days, her first teaching appointments were in the country regions. She spent a few years at each of Korrumburra, Leongatha, Wangaratta and Stawell. This photo, taken in 1946 at Stawell High School, shows her in basketball coach mode.
