1900 approx - Research hotel103 viewsMartha Coleman (1858-1924), the second child to Bridget Carrucan and John Coleman, married William West in 1878.
They had 13 children between 1979 and 1896, the first 8 born in Eltham and the remaining 5 born in Research where they moved in 1890. They lived the remainder of their lives in the Research Hotel where William was the proprieter.
It was passed onto us by Karen Hough who comments:
This image was given to me by a family member, Barry Smith, who has the original image (an old postcard, as I believe they used to do to photos). It belonged to his grandmother, Elizabeth Martha West who was the 7th child of William and Martha. She was raised there and returned there to live for a while when her husband Claude Wiltshire went off to WW1. William West's name is clearly visible on the fascia board. It was taken some time after the other image of the hotel as the verandah above the post office looks very saggy!

1972 - Peter McKenna151 viewsPeter McKenna, well-known as an Australian Rules footballer and subsequently as a sports commentator, is married to Marita Browne, the great grand daughter of Peter Carrucan.
Peter wore the number 6 guernsey for Collingwood Football Club from 1965 to 1975. In his 12 year career with the Magpies, he played 180 games, led the club's goal kicking in eight consecutive seasons (1967-1974), won the club's best and fairest player award in 1970, won an All-Australian vest in 1972 and won the John Coleman medal (the most goals kicked in the season by any player in the AFL) in 1972 and 1973.
Regarded as one of the first 'pop stars' in the game, he was a favourite of the Magpie Army due to his supreme skills.

1900s - Culla Hill painting170 viewsIn the early 1900s, Mary Sweeney commissioned travelling painter Charles Bertie to paint the Culla Hill homestead. She took this painting with her when she married Michael Carrucan in 1910 and it hung in the Dalton St farmhouse for many years. In the 1960s, the Burstons (the then owners of Culla Hill) had a card printed from the painting. This copy of the card has been given to me by Peter Cuffley.
This painting was thought by the family to have been lost but it has now come to light that the painting was donated to the Shire of Eltham in 1970 when there was a community callout for historical contributions to the Shire's centenary history project.
The very fragile original was kept in the Council strongroom and suffered significant damage to its edges over the years. It has also yellowed and lost its frame.
A comparison of the original when it was digitised in 2022 with the negative taken 50 years earlier reveals that the left 20% of the sketch has been cut off, probably due to damage.
The Shire of Nillumbik gave EDHS the Shire of Eltham archives in 2004 but the sketch was not part of that listing. EDHS probably received it after that time.

1833 Darling Harbour Sydney National Library of Australia128 viewsHaving obtained a Ticket of Leave dated 29th of November 1831, Thomas Sweeney is increasingly reported in Sydney newspaper lists of coastal trading vessels between Wollongong and Sydney. To sail into Sydney was no mean feat as the captain had to negotiate ‘The Heads’, the entrance to Port Jackson, and then navigate a passage to a selected mooring such as in Cockle Bay (Darling Harbour).
