THE FIRST GENERATION
We know little of the original Carrucans from whom our story starts. We do know that the name Carrucan and its many variants appear in early parish records in County Clare but it was not a common name then nor is it a common name now. The Master Index of Baptisms, held by the Clare Heritage Centre records, lists many variants which may or may not include related families.
- Kierucan ( 1787 in Limerick City)
- Kerucan (1819 in East Clare)
- Carroocan (1855 Griffith Valuation for Fanore Beg)
- Carukan and Karucan (death Registers of 1867 and 1919 respectively)
- Carokan (1901 Census)
- Carrucan, the general spelling of the name today.
Further, there is discussion as to whether yet another name, Corrigan, may be the source of the modern name Carrucan
We know a little of one such Carrucan family - poor farmers in the village of Fisherstreet in County Clare in Ireland who had two children, Patrick and Denis - but we do not even know their names or when they were born, married or died. Yet this long forgotten generation of Carrucans is of great significance for us because it was from their sons Patrick and Denis that the Carrucan family has spread across the world.
