VALE JIM MARTIN: 1927-2011
It is with great personal sadness that I must advise family members that Jim Martin died at home on the morning of Wednesday 13 April.
Jim was the main driving force behind the ongoing Carrucan genealogical investigations for the last 15+ years and was instrumental in the very successful sesquicentenary celebrations that were held in Melbourne in 2004 and the publication of the very extensive Carrucan genealogical tables (Dirt Poor ~ Spirit Rich Volume II) at that time.
Since then, Jim has been guiding us all towards the publication of an even more extensive Carrucan family history book which is due for publication in the next few months. I am sure that most of you have been contacted by Jim, either by phone or by email, over the last few years. His enthusiasm for the task saw no limits and he was indeed a 'mover and shaker' of the highest order.
We all knew that Jim had been struggling in the last few years with a number of serious health issues but he was never one to complain or let increasing frailties get in his way. I used to go over regularly to work with him on book planning so was aware of what a struggle life had become for him. Indeed, I think it was the book that kept him going for as long as he did and he remained fully committed to it right to the end. Even he day before he died, he was working on the final chapter to complete things and we exchanged 3 emails during the course of the day (2 of the emails were instructions from Jim!). At least, he knew that the book was on course for publication and that nothing was going to stop it now.
The Committee will continue with the task of book publication and I will take over the role of liason with regard to it.
Jim was born in 1927 and was 83 years of age. A Memorial Service to celebrate the Jim's life will be held at St Columba's Uniting Church, Banool Rd, Balwyn, on Tuesday April 19 at 2 p.m. In memory of Jim, donations to the Uniting Church Share Appeal or Guide Dogs Victoria would be welcome. PRIVATE CREMATION.
I shall miss him deeply as will we all. The following short Valediction has been placed on the website: Rev Jim Martin.pdf
Our deepest condolences to his wife Helen and to their children Catherine, Richard, Liz and Ann, their sons-in-law Gregory, Steven and Simon, and their grandchildren Jeremy, Anders and Claudia.
