THE CALNIN FAMILY
The Calnin line came into effect when Anne (Babe) Carrucan, the youngest of 10 children born to Patrick and Mary Carrucan, married James Nicholas (Jim) Calnin in 1897. This family line may be traced as follows:
Patrick Carrucan and Mary (nee O’Brien) ↓ Bridget (1858), Michael (1860), Susan (1862), Patrick (1864), Thomas (1866), Mary Anne (1868), Catherine (1869), Margaret (1871), Frances (1872) and Anne (1874) |
Their youngest child, Anne (Babe),
married James Calnin in 1897 ↓ Maurice (1897), Clarence (1898), James (1901), Mary (1904), John (1906), Susan (1909), Thomas (1910), Edward (1913), Margaret (1915) and Kathleen (1919) |
The Calnin family lived in Clifton Hill before moving to Ballarat where Jim worked as a farmer at the Asylum.
The children were all musically talented, having acquired their skills in music from their mother Anne. Maurice was a gifted tenor, Edward and Susan played the piano, Margaret taught the violin and Kathleen played piano in dance bands in Ballarat. This musical interest often included dance band sessions at the family home in Ballarat.

In about 1933, Jim retired and the Calnins moved from the corner of Forrest and Gregory Streets (near Lake Wendouree) out to Burrumbeet. Jim died on 28 December 1943. Annie died on 25 April 1946 at the age of 71 from acute pulmonary problems and is buried at Ballarat, Victoria.
The Calnins are one of the huge number of family lines that form the complex web of the Carrucan family and they are discussed further in our book 'Dirt Poor ~ Spirit Rich', soon to be published.
